UPDF Soldier from Rukiga District Shoots Self Dead in Mpigi

Residents of Mpigi District were left in shock after a Uganda Peoples’ Defense Force (UPDF) soldier, identified as Lt. Amon Ariho, allegedly took his own life. Lt. Ariho, attached to the Engineering Brigade, reportedly drove his Toyota Fielder (registration number UBJ 493Q) to Nsimbe-Nakirebe Playground, where he shot himself dead in full view of about six individuals playing football although some sources say that he chased them first.

According to some of the officers, Lt. Ariho had sent WhatsApp messages to his colleagues, warning them of his intention to commit suicide. Lt Col. Bob Bampalana, commander of the UPDF 5th Division, revealed that he received numerous calls from concerned officers regarding Lt. Ariho’s alarming posts in their forums. Shortly afterward, news broke that the soldier had ended his life.

Lt. Ariho allegedly used an SMG rifle, firing a single fatal shot under his chin. Investigators later discovered the firearm contained 25 rounds of ammunition out of its 30-round capacity.

Katonga Region Police Spokesperson ASP Majid Karrim confirmed the body was transported to Mulago mortuary, and the vehicle was towed to Mpigi Police Station. Preliminary investigations also uncovered a letter written by Lt. Ariho addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), expressing grievances and citing a high-ranking officer as a key factor in his decision to end his life.

The letter read, in part:
“Lt. Amon Ariho RO/13999, I am leaving. Please, in deep sadness, come and take my body home to Rukiga District, Kamwezi, Kibanda, Katungu. CDF Sir, I request you to take good care of the children I leave behind, for their father is no more.”

Lt Col. Bampalana urged UPDF personnel and the general public to communicate openly when facing challenges, emphasizing that sharing problems could lead to solutions. This incident adds to a growing concern about mental health issues within Uganda’s armed forces. In 2022 alone, 13 police officers and four soldiers reportedly committed suicide.

At the time of publication, UPDF and police authorities had yet to release an official statement.

Unconfirmed reports suggest Lt. Ariho’s letter requested the CDF to address issues within the Engineering Brigade. Investigations are ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities review the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

Lt. Ariho hailed from Kamwezi, Kibanda, in Rukiga District. His death has left his family, colleagues, and community in mourning as they await the return of his remains.
