UPDF Speaks Out on Soldier’s Suicide in Mpigi

The Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) has expressed regret following the suicide of Lt. Amon Ariho, an officer attached to the Engineering Brigade, who shot himself dead on at Nakirebe playground in Mpigi District.

In a statement, UPDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye acknowledged the tragic incident and assured the public that the institution would conduct a thorough investigation. “The CDF assures the public that the UPDF will carry out a thorough investigation, and whoever shall be found culpable will be brought to book,” he said.

Brig. Gen. Kulayigye emphasized the availability of established channels within the UPDF to address both individual and collective challenges. “We appreciate that individuals do not have equal or similar skills to handle challenges. Therefore, we encourage our personnel to always seek administrative and professional help using our established structures,” he added.

Lt. Ariho reportedly drove his vehicle, a Toyota Fielder (registration number UBJ 493Q), to Nsimbe-Nakirebe Playground, where he ended his life in full view of few people playing football. He allegedly sent suicide threats via WhatsApp before the incident, prompting concern from his colleagues.

Preliminary investigations revealed Lt. Ariho used an SMG rifle with 25 bullets still loaded in the magazine. Unconfirmed reports suggest he left a note addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces, highlighting grievances and requesting support for his children.

The UPDF has reiterated the importance of mental health awareness and the need for personnel to utilize the institution’s support systems.
